Timor-Leste, formerly known as East Timor, became the world’s newest, independent, democratic nation, in May 2002. Situated north west of Darwin, between Australia and Indonesia, East Timor is already beginning to draw small numbers of travelers to the island. With its beautiful, unspoiled beaches, world class scuba diving, spectacular landscapes and rich history, it is easy to see why.
In 1512 the arrival of sailors and merchants from Portugal, resulted in the colonization of the island that would last for over the next 400 years.
During World War II, Timor was invaded by the Japanese who stayed for over 3 years, causing devastation and human misery. During the time of Japanese occupation approximately 50,000 Timorese lost their lives. Following the war, Portuguese rule was restored in East Timor, but development of the country was slow, leaving the Timorese society almost unchanged.
On 28th November 1975, following an attempted coup and clashes between rival political contenders, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was proclaimed. Within 7 days, the new nation was invaded by Indonesia and thousands more Timorese were to lose their lives, during the next 24 years of Indonesian control.
In 1999, a United Nations sponsored referendum, led to the people of Timor-Leste voting overwhelmingly in favour of independence. The declaration of independence was finally implemented on the 20th of May 2002, creating the first Constitutional Government of Timor-Leste.

Come on a trip with us and some of the crew. This will be an adventure with heaps of fun and some awesome diving.
Hideaway Island Resort and Marine Sanctuary is a small coral atoll that's about as close as you'll get to a Robinson Crusoe island escape in the South Pacific. Power is generated around the clock on the island, water is fed from the top of the pristine Cascade waterfalls and outside of the office there are no phones or faxes.
Surrounded by clear turquoise water, coral reefs and thousands of fish, this Melanesian style resort is the custodian of one of Vanuatu's only marine sanctuaries.
Hideaway Island has a reputation for being a relaxed paradise for divers and snorkelers alike. Where else in the world can you roll out of bed and be SCUBA diving in less than 15 minutes and for snorkelers even less. We have more than 15 dive sites all within 15 minutes of the shore. We run scheduled single tank dives at 8:30am, 10:30am and 2:00pm every day

One island in Vanuatu, more than any other attracts divers like a magnet - Espiritu Santo But the main attraction is the S.S. President Coolidge, a luxury liner that was used as a troop ship during WWII. The impressive wreck -198 metres long - is one of the largest accessible wrecks to sport divers anywhere in the world.
The dive can be done from boat or shore with an easy walk to a line that leads to the ship's bow. Visibility can range from 15 to 35 metres, and the sea is usually calm. The ship is so big that even if you dived it ten times in different locations, you would still only view a part of it. As most of the dives are over 30 meters, decompression stops are necessary. These stops are made on the coral garden where you can see a colourful array of hard corals and fish life. Max Depth: 20 - 70m
